Scary Woman

Using one of the stories from our Mystery and Suspense unit (duo-tang) - complete a journal entry. Use the example given in your notes and answer the following questions.


Is it a mystery or suspense?

This story is a mystery because we are not sure that Mrs. Foster has done anything wrong. We don't know that anything is wrong until the end of the story. It was only after she made a phone call to fix the elevator that we know Mr. Foster is inside and dead.

When is the suspense introduced?

The suspense was introduced was Mrs. Foster got home from Paris. I don't know that she did anything bad until she find the house cold, dusty, and empty. When she called for the elevator to be fixed was the best part.

How is it resolved?

The problem is resolved when Mrs. Foster leave her husband in the elevator and go to Paris. She won't have the problem of waiting for him anymore cause he is dead.

Did the author include any red herrings?

Yes the author included red herrings because the story is very confusing. I don't know that Mrs. Foster do anything bad until the end. When she listen by the door, I don't know she is bad to leave her husband. I don't know she kill her husband on purpose.

Is the story an example of poetic justice?

No this is not poetic justice. She is suppose to love her husband. He did not need to die even if he was mean to her some times. It was very cruel to leave him. It is a bad way to die. He would not have any food or water. He is all alone with nobody to help him. Mrs. Foster don't even feel bad about killing her husband.

Journal Entry



The story "The Way up to Heaven" is a good story. It was very weird. I didn't know that Mrs. Foster kill her husband until the end of the story. I like it because Mrs. Foster murder her husband and run away for a while to visit her daughter. She doesn't like him because he is mean to her all the time and she get sick of him being late all the time. She always have to wait for him and he know that she is always scared to be late. She didn't help him to get out of the elevator so he die inside the elevator. She knew he was inside the elevator but she leave for her trip anyway. She also know that nobody be in the house for six weeks while she is gone. He was not nice to Mrs. Foster so she was sick of him being mean to her. When she was going back home she not sure what she will find. When she walk in the door and saw all the mail, she knew no-one had been to the house. The house was cold and dusty. She looked around and found a phone number. I still don't know what was happening. She call and say the elevator need to be fixed because it stuck. It is very confusing cause I don't know for sure that Mr. Foster is inside. He would be dead for sure because nobody see him for six weeks. All the servant have holiday and Mrs. Foster go to Paris for a visit. Mrs. Foster is annoying to Mr. Foster and he got sick of it so Mr. Foster don't like her and she knows Mr. Foster don't like her anymore. She just let him die in the elevator and she went for her holiday for 6 weeks. Mrs. Foster is responsible for her husband dying because she could have helped him when he got stuck in the elevator.

Killing the Man You Love

Using the story, "Lamb To Slaughter" by Roald Dahl - complete a journal entry. Use the example given in your notes and answer the following questions.Is it a mystery or suspense? Mrs. Maloney is waiting for her husband to come home. She keeps asking him questions and Mr. Moloney is rude to her and doesn't want to answer anything. He doesn't want to hurt her feelings but he wants to divorce her. After that Mrs. Moloney is unhappy and she murders him with the frozen meat. She pretends that he isn't dead and goes to the store to buy some stuff. She wants everyone to think that someone else killed him when she was buying groceries. She can pretend that it happened when she was out. When she got back home she called the police and the police came and she knows them all. She lies to everyone and says that she found him on the floor when she got back from getting groceries. One of the police officers asks Mrs. Maloney about the food in the oven. She offers to feed the policemen because they are so nice to her. She pretend to be so sad and crying. The police don't want to waste the food so they eat the weapon and she has an evil smile.



This story is a suspense. There are no secrets. I know that Mrs. Maloney is the killer.



The suspense is introduced when the police officer asks Mrs. Maloney if she knows that the oven is still on and the meat is still inside. It is the exciting part because the police were all looking for the weapon and the person who killed Mr. Moloney. At this part of the story I think that the police might figure out that Mrs. Maloney used the lamb to kill her husband.

It is resolved when the police eat the leg of lamb. There is no more evidence to find. The police eat it so Mrs. Maloney will not go to jail.

No this is not poetic justice. Mrs. Maloney should go to jail because she killed her husband. If she doesn't go to jail will she kill someone else if they make her mad.

No red herrings were in this story because I know who died and who killed them. The evidence is gone so the police will never find out who killed Mr. Maloney.

2. We have been reading Anne Sexton's poem, "Courage" and Rudyard Kipling's poem "If". Both poems deal with the theme of courage. Which poem appeals most to you and explain why. Consider what the poet says and how each poet expresses his/her viewpoint.

I like the poem "If" because there is alot of good information and alot to learn from the poem. I liked how it repeated the word "if'. I liked lines 19 and 20 in the poem. It says that if you lose everything, you should not quit or give up. You continue to try. You don't look to others for pity or sympathy. It was also good advice when he said that there is more to life than wealth and we should be willing to sacrifice it all just to be happy.

Another reason I liked the poem "If" better is because I can learn how to be a better girl. I can be better if I follow his advise like how you should always try to be yourself and not pretend to be someone your not.

The poet expresses his viewpoint by repeating the word if. He says if you try new things in your life that are positive you will grow up to be a good person. When he used the word if, it talks about trying something new but nice. He says in the poem to be good to other people, be yourself, not pretend to be someone else, be patient, believe in yourself, don't lie, and love your friends and family.

This was a good poem for me because I learn some new things and learn to try to do stuff with people that I don't know. I liked the poem and how it was written so that is why I chose this poem as my favorite.

Do you agree with Kipling's message in this poem? Why or why not? Identify which of Kipling's statements is the most meaningful to you and explain why. Is Kipling's advice useful for people today? Why or why not?



Yes I agree with Kipling's message because you can learn a lot of important things from him. He says "'if you can" a lot. He want you to try new stuff. He give us good advice to be a good person. I choose the statement on lines 19 and 20 that say "And lose, and start again at your beginnings and never breathe a word about your loss." I like this statement because if you lose everything, you don't quit, you continue to try. You don't look to others for pity or sympathy. He wants people to do stuff to make them a better man. He think if he can do stuff on your own, all you have to do is try. He say that if you are nice to other people and are patient, you will be a good person. He also say to believe in yourself and respect yourself. You should not lie or lie about people. This is a good message.

His advice is good today because it is always good advice. He give you the idea that you can do anything you want to do. He tells you things like if you don't know how to do something, it is a good idea to try it. He say that you can make dreams but be realistic and work towards something you can achieve. You should not hate others and not be bugged when people don't like you. You should just be yourself and don't try to be better than anyone else.

A good statement is line 17 and 18. He say it is good when you realize there is more to life than wealth. He say you would be willing to sacrifice all the money just to be happy. Another reason he give good advice is at the end of the poem. He say that there are a lot of opportunities in the would so we should take advantage of them. We will be a good person if we take his advice.

1. How does being able to write change Christy’s life?






I think being able to write has changed Christy's life because he can communicate now. It has given him mental freedom. Now he can write with his family. He can tell them what is on his mind. He can do the stuff he want to do. Back before he can't communicate with people and he can't do the things he wants to do. First time he pick up the chalk to write the word was hard but now it's not hard. I think he is a hero because he can't talk but he can use writing to talk with people. He makes me think that some people can't talk but that doesn't mean they are not smart. He is very hard working to be able to learn to write. He is a changed person because he can tell people what he wants and can tell people how he feels. He does not have to struggle to let people know he understands them. He feels like everyone else because he can communicate. He feels like a real person and is thankful that his mom and family love him so much and did not give him away.

Eng 10 Mrs. Brown Paragraph

Mrs. Brown is an awesome mother because she is so protective about her son Christy. She will always look after her son. Mrs. Brown has 15 other children but she still wants to keep Christy at home. She refused to give him up. She loves Christy like all the other children. She is a good and protective mother. Even when the doctors and members of her family said she should put
Christy in a home, she would not. She knew in her heart that Christy could understand her. She thinks that her son is not an idiot. She is very headstrong to keep Christy at home. She would not listen to the doctors. Mrs. Brown was defiant to the doctors and did what she thought was best in her own mind. She was dedicated to help Christy and treat him the same as the others. Mrs. Brown was supportive of Christy. She would say things to Christy like "Try again, try again Christy." Mrs. Brown had to work very hard but she still take the time to talk to Christy and read him books. She was gracious of her time and her love. Mrs. Brown is the best mom in the world. I'm very proud of Mrs. Brown.
